Keith: the female version is still called LE maire. Yes, we know three lady mayors very well. As for me standing - you must be joking. I wouldn't pass the first test (i.e. fluent French) to become a French citizen and that is a prerequisite for taking office. However, I have heard of Brits who have been elected as maire after taking French nationality. Je vois que les fées ont bien travaillé.
